Report – AI and Education

The report from MIT's committee "on AI Use in Teaching, Learning, and Research Training... to understand the role of generative AI in the life and educational mission of the Institute and recommend how to navigate its challenges and opportunities".

After describing the "As Is", it sets out 8 principles and a range of "immediate and long-term actions for both instructors and the administration". Some highlights (for me, at least):

• the damage being done right now to students: isolation, undermined confidence, "Eroding the “social contract” between instructors and students"...
• the fundamental nature of the challenge to education: "Every subject ... likely need to be reexamined and potentially revamped", with AI forcing a complete "reassessment of the ... purpose of higher education"
• MIT will need to be both humble (we might be massively wrong) but also bold: "uncertainty can’t be an excuse for inaction. This is not a moment for patches and duct tape"
• replacing undergraduate research assistants with AI may be resource-efficient, but "research is also an apprenticeship... learning-by-doing may produce seeming “inefficiencies,” but that’s a feature, not a bug."
• AI is destroying the teacher-student dynamic, with teachers policing student use with unreliable AI detectors, while using AI themselves
